Young and Talented; The Story of Davido

Early Life

Davido was born in 21st November 1992, in Atlanta, U.S.A to Nigerian parents and was named David Adeleke. He was however brought up in Lagos and attended the British International School in Lagos though he has traveled to many other countries including the U.S and U.K thus having the opportunity to experience various different cultures. He got interested in music at the tender age of eleven, teaching himself the basics about it by visiting various studies before joining a band when in high school where he was able to discover the depths of music. Knowing how difficult rising in the music career, Davido began by lending his talent to upcoming artists such as NPZ thus allowing him to gain exposure and to know more about the music industry.

Life as an artist

Davido says that his life as an artist and his music career are inspired by a number of people among them musicians such as Don Jazzy, 2 Face and Wande Coal. Once Davido was good enough and well established in the music industry, Davido and his brother Ade decided to set up a record label known as HKN music. According to him, this was inspired by the belief that if you want something done, you should get it done yourself. This record label he believes best suits him because through it he can produce music that suits style and not what someone else thinks should be produced.

Davido’s music career is surely a big success, since the year 2009 when he decided to seriously get into music, he has never looked back and his hard work and determination seems to be paying off quite well and with the support he gets from his family and friends, he has everything he needs to take his music career to soaring heights. He has quickly developed a huge fan base all over Nigeria, U.S.A and even in the U.K. From his first single, ‘Back When,’ that has gotten a lot of media attention Davido has seen great success. What made his career shoot however was the release of the song Dami Duro, a song that for a long time now has been voted the top hit in Nigeria.

He loves entertaining people he says, all thanks to his mother. Losing his mother he says is the most traumatizing experience he has even gone through and it is for her, to carry on her legacy, her love to entertain, that he produces his music. His late mother passed on in 2003.

School life

Unlike most young artistes, Davido does not let his music career interfere with his school life. He is a living testimony that one can still go to school even while living their dream. He is a part time student at the Babcock University studying Business Administration. His education, he says, is important to his music career because it will enable him to efficiently run the record label. He is a busy young man as can be seen from his tight schedule and the many concerts he is invited to perform in but with determination he is bound to make it both in his education and music career.
